"Work-related stress is among the most challenging issues in occupational safety and health management. This impacts on the health of individuals, organizations and national economies. Around half of European workers consider stress to be common in their workplace, and it contributes to around half of all lost working days. Stress is not an illness, it is a state and it is often misunderstood, but if not managed and stress becomes excessive and protracted, mental and physical illness in the workplace may occur. It makes good business and social sense to manage workplace stress. Proactive risk management will produce fewer days absence and fewer workplace accidents, providing economic benefit and a healthier workforce producing better quality output. An engaged organization will also benefit from improved social responsibility, employee relations and an enhanced reputation. Risk managers are becoming more involved in people risk management and work-related stress is for many organizations, a top risk in their risk register. "
